Every Total Immersion workshop follows this foolproof sequence. Our experience has shown that every student who masters skills in this order progresses to effortless, efficient strokes with unprecedented ease and speed

  1. Harmony with the water

    Freestyle Workshops

    We start with simple exercises to learn balance. As soon as you master balance — the feeling of being completely and effortlessly supported by the water — you'll stop wasting energy fighting "that sinking feeling" and feel more comfortable than ever. You'll also learn every subsequent skill much faster. Balance is the non-negotiable foundation skill of efficient swimming. Until you learn it, all your movements will be tiring and inefficient. Fish are always balanced and your first TI lessons will show you how to be balanced too

  2. Pierce the Water

    What's holding you back from swimming faster or farther? It's drag, not your fitness or strength. Water is a wall because it's 1000 times denser than air

    The cleverest way to improve your swimming is to learn to slip your body through the smallest possible "hole" in the water. "Slippery" swimmers need far less power or effort at any speed. Fish are faster than humans because their body shapes are so much sleeker. Total Immersion swimmers learn to swim with Fishlike shapes

  3. Stroke Smoothly

    Because swimming happens in a fluid, FLUENT movement is hugely rewarded, while rough movement is hugely penalised

    Human swimmers lose more energy making waves and creating turbulence than any workout can provide

    Fish slip through the water with barely a ripple. We teach you to practise smooth, fluent propulsion that draws effortless power from core-body rhythms

    The main impediment to improvement is muscle memory. "Practising struggle" develops deeply ingrained inefficient habits. TI drills bypass stubborn muscle memory and simplify the learning process by guiding you through a seamless series of mini-skills. You benefit by practising "Trial-and-success," instead of trial-and-error. And each drill imprints something extremely valuable that will help you swim the whole stroke better than you ever imagined possible

A TI Weekend Workshop is the most transforming swimming instruction on earth. Our students — even those who have been frustrated for years — realise immediate and dramatic improvement in their stroke efficiency after just a few hours of our specialised instruction. The average improvement in stroke efficiency at TI workshops is 25 percent. The increase in swimming satisfaction is limitless!

We can teach ANYONE to swim better. We routinely work miracles with unskilled and inexperienced swimmers. If you can swim at least 25 meters in some fashion, we can turn you from a struggler into a swimmer literally overnight. Can I Benefit From A TI Workshop?

When we ask, at Saturday's orientation, who expects to be the slowest swimmer, about half the class raise their hands. They leave on Sunday with huge smiles and beautiful new strokes. The TI freestyle workshop isn't designed for non-swimmers or those who have deep-seated fears, but any modestly active person who can swim 25 to 50 meters in some manner — not exclusively freestyle — can successfully complete our learning sequence

A TI workshop prioritises attention, not exertion: You'll do much more thinking and learning than you ever thought was possible and we'll give you time before each lap to get feedback, catch your breath and gather your thoughts. And even if you think of yourself as a pretty decent swimmer — so long as you still have Human DNA — we can rejuvenate your swimming and help you enjoy it far more. Many people tell us they learned and improved more in two days of TI instruction than in 10 years of organised "training"

TI Workshop at a Glance

In seven-hours of pool time we'll teach you a series of thoughtfully-choreographed movements, beginning with simple balance positions and progressing seamlessly to whole-stroke swimming.  Each step teaches you something essential about being Fishlike in the water

Pool Sessions

Saturday Morning is devoted to unlearning wasteful "struggling skills." We'll master simple Balance exercises that will teach you how to be effortlessly supported by the water and strikingly increase your ease and efficiency.

Saturday Afternoon, having already shown you how to move through the water with far more economy, we'll teach you slippery body positions and effortless body rotation with the Under Switch drill sequence.

Sunday Morning we'll we’ll teach you to propel yourself with effortless power by linking your armstrokes to a balanced, slippery, rhythmically-rotating core body, using the Zipper switch drill sequence.

Sunday Afternoon, you’ll graduate from Human To Fishlike as we transition from drills to swimming with unprecedented ease and flow, graduating from Zipper Switch through to the Overswitch sequence and finishing with an introduction to whole-stroke swimming

Classroom Sessions: We will show you video of Fishlike and Human swimmers to illustrate how TI techniques put you in a swimming flow state. We will show you footage of the drills and explain in detail how and why they are successful in re-tooling your stroke.  We will also record some of the 'in pool' sessions to show you how you were performing some of the drills  

Video Analysis: We'll tape you underwater on Saturday morning and review it during the Saturday afternoon classroom session. This will show you graphically why you're not swimming as well as you'd like or as well as you could and what are your primary opportunities for improvement. We'll repeat that process Sunday afternoon to give you a clear sense of what you've learned and what your immediate priorities for further learning will be - we do not supply copies of this footage as it is, by the time you leave the workshop merely an historical record of what you were like

Do I Need To Get In Shape First?

Some of our students wonder whether they need to prepare with extra training prior to the workshop. It may actually be better not to do extra swimming before you attend. Often those who have the least swimming experience, learn new skills more quickly because their bad-habits muscle memory is less ingrained.
